Pokai Bay Beach (Pōka’ī)

Beautiful sheltered Waianae beach great for paddleboarding

The Beach

Looking for a family friendly beach? Pokai Bay Beach Park is a superb choice for anyone looking for a place to bring the whole family. Unlike many of the other Leeward side beaches, Pokai Bay is calm year round because of the breakwater protecting visitors to this beach from high surf conditions. This controlled environment allows visitors to relax with ease of mind.

Many of the locals and tourists appreciate coming to Pokai Bay for a variety of reasons. In addition to this beaches safe atmosphere, there’s also room for activities like fishing, surfing and snorkeling. If you want to cast a line in the hopes of catching some ono(Hawaiian: good to eat) treats, your best bet is to fish off of Pokai’s peninsula. Near the middle of the bay you’ll find a narrow reef where many smaller waves break making it a perfect place for the adventurers at heart to launch their surfing careers. for those of us who are more interested in a leisurely kind of day, just like the neighboring beach Maili Beach Park , Pokai’s white sanded shoreline provides plenty of room for unfolding those towels and catching some rays.

Are you someone who’s fascinated by Hawaiian history? Pokai was named after Cheif Pokai. He was known for being the person to first bring coconut palm trees to the islands. Near the peninsula you can find an ancient Hawaiian temple with the name of Ku’ilioloa Heiau. This temple site was used for honing ocean related skills mainly related to navigation and fishing.
