Beautiful natural marine geyser with a great vantage point from above
The Halona Blowhole Lookout is popular attraction on O’ahu’s southeast coast. This underwater lava tube has openings on either side so when the tide is up and the wave’s are strong as each wave crashes into the coastal cliffs the force of the water shoots up through the lava tube and into the air like a geyser.
Some adventurous (or stupid) people may try to get close to the blowhole but that’s a bad idea. It’s very dangerous and some people have even died. It’s best to observe it from the designated lookout.
Aside from the blowhole, this lookout offers amazing views of the coast and the ocean. On very clear days you can even see the neighboring islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai. During the winter whale watching season, between November and March, you can spot humpback whales in the ocean waters as they birth and raise their calves before heading back to the frigid waters near Alaska. You may also spot some sea turtles that hang out in the waters below.
While your in the area, don’t forget to check out Halona Beach Cove just to the southwest.
There’s public parking located off of Kalaniana’ole Hwy.
